A sample stands for a place.

Quadrats sample a known area and can estimate abundance of organisms that do not move rapidly. Random placement reduces selection bias. Transects are useful when an environmental gradient is the question.

Replicates matter because organisms are rarely distributed uniformly. Calculate a mean per quadrat, then scale it to the total area only if the sample is reasonably representative. Report uncertainty and sampling limitations.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Five 1 m2m^{2} quadrats contain 2, 4, 3, 5 and 1 plants. Estimate for a 100 m2m^{2} site.

  1. The mean is 15 ÷ 5 = 3 plants per m2m^{2}.
  2. The site estimate is 3 × 100 = 300 plants.
