Catalysts in living systems.

Enzymes are biological catalysts. Their active sites bind suitable substrates and lower the activation energy of a reaction. Digestive enzymes break large food molecules into smaller products that can cross membranes.

As temperature rises, molecular collisions tend to increase until an optimum is reached. High temperatures can alter the active site and reduce enzyme activity. pH can also change the shape and charge of the active site.

An enzyme works fastest at 37 °C but slowly at 70 °C.

  1. The initial rise reflects more frequent productive collisions.
  2. At 70 °C, loss of active-site shape can prevent substrate binding.
